Podium for Checo in Russia, fifth in his F1 history

11/10/2015 08:55

Sochi, Russia, October 11, 2015 - With a bold strategy and an extraordinary handling a final round full of drama took place where Checo went from P3 to P5 and P3 again while Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas got envolved in a contact. Today the Mexican driver took the podium in the Russian GP, fifth in his history and promising to face the GP of Mexico.

Sergio Perez, driver to Sahara Force India with Claro-Telmex-Telcel-Infinitum, has made a very intelligent race, driving soft tires from lap 12. When the Safety Car appeared the team called him to pits to change super soft tires to soft tires with which he managed to finish the 53 laps agreed at the 5,853 kilometers layout.

Perez took off from seventh place and from lap 35 he had practically positioned third, and from that round he had to defend himself the Finnish Valtteri Bottas from Williams Team, but for the last three laps Checo’s tires (car 11) could hardly give more.

So, on the last lap, Bottas overtook Checo and Kimi Raikkonen took the opportunity to also pass the Mexican driver, he positioned fifth, something that frustrated the hard work and bothered his fans.

But meters ahead Kimi collided with Bottas and Checo benefited to take the third place that rightfully belonged to him today for the effort put in Sochi. With this result Checo gets his fifth podium (three achieved with Sauber and two with Force India).

In addition, Checo reaches 54 points and ninth in the Drivers Championship and contributes with 15 more points for Sahara Force India to be consolidated in the top-5 of the Constructors Championship with 92 points.

The race was won by Lewis Hamilton followed by Sebastian Vettel and with Checo in third to complement the Russian podium. Nico Hulkenberg, Mexican teammate, had to leave the race early after a spin and crash with Marcus Ericsson.

Checo Pérez:

"It's great to be back. I really enjoyed it. It seemed that everything had escaped from our hands. I was a little disappointed but at the end I did my last lap and I thought I had given everything and there was nothing else I could do. Many laps with that set of tires, they were worn out, more in the front, and when the last lap came it was amazing. We deserved this position, the team did a fantastic job and I dedicate this podium to all the boys. Now we must prepare for Austin and for Mexico. "
